What Is 2x Holiday Pay? How to Calculate Holiday Pay Correctly

2x holiday pay is compensation an employer must pay when an employee works on a holiday, at a rate of no less than twice the hourly wage under the Labour Protection Act B.E. 2541 (1998). It is calculated from the actual hours worked and commonly applies to employees who are not entitled to regular holiday pay.

What Is 2x Holiday Pay, and How Is It Different from OT 1.5 ?

2x holiday pay is compensation an employer must pay an employee when the employee works during normal working hours on a holiday at a rate of no less than twice the hourly wage under Section 62

Many people confuse 1.5x, 2x, and 3x overtime rates. The table below explains when each rate applies:

Type OT When It Applies Pay Rate
1.5x Overtime Work beyond normal hours on a working day ≥ 1.5 times/hour
2x Holiday Work Pay Work during normal hours on a holiday ≥ 2 times/hour
3x Holiday Overtime Work beyond normal hours on a holiday ≥ 3 times/hour

Example: An employee works on Saturday, a holiday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Work during normal hours is paid at 2x Holiday Work Pay If the employee continues until 8:00 p.m., the additional holiday overtime is paid at 3x Holiday Overtime

Is 2x Holiday Pay Calculated Differently for Daily and Monthly Employees?

The difference is how the hourly wage is determined. Daily and monthly employees are calculated as follows:

  • Daily employees— Divide the daily wage by the normal working hours, generally 8 hours, to determine the hourly wage.
  • Monthly employees— Convert the monthly salary to a daily wage by dividing by 30, then divide by 8 to determine the hourly wage.

As explained above, 2x pay generally applies when an employee works on a holiday and is commonly relevant toemployees who are not entitled to holiday pay , such as daily wage employees, who must receive no less than twice their normal wage for holiday work.

How to Calculate 2x Holiday Pay for Daily Employees

For daily employees who are not entitled to regular holiday pay but work on a holiday, calculate 2x holiday pay as follows:

2x Holiday Pay Formula for Daily Employees

Daily formula = [(Daily wage ÷ Normal working hours) × 2] × Actual hours worked

Example: Calculating2x holiday pay for a daily employee

Mr. Somchai is a daily wage employee earning THB 500 per day. He works 3 hours on his weekly holiday. His holiday work pay is calculated as follows:

  1. Hourly wage: THB 500 ÷ 8 = THB 62.50 per hour
  2. 2x holiday pay: (THB 62.50 × 2) × 3 = THB 375
